Words are incredibly powerful. A single sentence can win you over, put you out, set your boundaries, and change how others perceive you.

Nnedi Okoroafor, an award-winning writer and Marvel content creator trended on twitter for 2 days because of 3 words: TALK IS CHEAP. Powerful!

What happened was that a writer tweeted about aspiring to be one of the greatest writers from Nigeria and Nnedi replied “talk is cheap”.

There was outrage. Many thought she could have done better especially as the young writer considered her a model. However, Nnedi said it’s her go to phrase – one she uses on her students. She said it was supposed to be motivational – push them to go and write. Some people supported Nnedi. They agreed that “talk is cheap” is motivational and the young writer should have taken advantage of the ‘opportunity’. However, many people still cannot see how “talk is cheap” is motivational – since it connotes disbelief.

Talk really is cheap, and the nicest gift you may be able to give to someone is a few positive words.

Here’s a list of 10 positive things you can say to anyone that is aspiring to be great or anyone that is looking up to you;

  • Keep working on it. You are almost there!
  • You know just what to do!
  • Sensational!
  • Go for it!
  • Nothing can stop you!
  • I want to help in any way I can
  • Big dreams. Hope you’re walking the talk
  • Can I see some of your works? I can guide you.
  • You can apply for this. I think this would benefit you.
  • The future is bright

We rise by lifting others. And sometimes, all we need to do is say positive things to people who look up to us – @Chydee, 2018.
