In 2023, Apple unveiled the Vision Pro at Worldwide Developers Conference, igniting significant interest and excitement within the global tech community. As the tech giant’s inaugural mixed-reality headset, it boasts powerful hardware and offers an immersive experience like never before.

Pre-orders for the device commenced on January 19, and despite its high starting price of $3,499, Apple managed to sell 200,000 units within the first ten days, as per insider reports shared with MacRumors.

While the Vision Pro comes with a plethora of impressive features, the question remains: Is it worth the hefty price tag? Here’s a comprehensive overview of Apple’s latest product, covering specs, functionality, and more.

1. 3D layered UI

Apple Vision Pro are pioneers, of interaction with reality. The layered responsive 3D design is what allows the user to see a beautiful picture from the glasses and at the same time embed it into the environment. Apple Vision Pro’s digital overlay is dynamic. Simply put, it adapts to natural light and adds virtual shadows to surfaces where needed.

The user is in two worlds at the same time but sees everything as one complex picture. This responsive design is Apple Vision Pro’s best new feature that will take the MR experience to the next level.

2. VisionOS

Whenever a new product is launched, it often brings along a new operating system. Apple unveiled VisionOS as the foundational software for its latest headset.

So, what will Apple Vision Pro show you in practice?

An intuitive interface with familiar elements like tab navigation. Volumes allow for displaying 3D content in Shared Space or Full Space without altering the viewing angle. Spaces organize the interface into sections, enabling users to customize their experience by multitasking or focusing on a single app.

3. Item and Tab Management

Apple Vision Pro brings sci-fi-like interactions with virtual objects to reality through real-time image segmentation. Users can effortlessly interact with objects, controlled by voice, gaze, and gestures. Inspired by Meta and Unity features, Vision Pro’s gaze functionalities are seamlessly integrated into VisionOS, adding excitement to the user experience.

4. Millions Pixels Display

Apple Vision Pro’s display quality exceeds that of 4K TVs, boasting around 23,000 pixels for an exceptional visual experience. This feature likely contributed to the headset’s cost. The impressive pixel density is achieved through two micro-OLED panels, which also support a wide color spectrum and outstanding dynamic range.

5. Intelligent Image and Text Detection

With Apple Vision Pro, you can kiss goodbye to scrolling forever and typing in data by hand. It uses smart technology to find important stuff in pictures and text. This is super useful for things like scanning documents, translating languages, and even reading text from images. Apple uses fancy tools like Natural Language Processing (NLP) and neural networks to make the text look human-like, not like it’s from a machine.

6. Low-Latency Chip

Apple recognized the power consumption challenge faced by headsets in delivering high-quality visuals with the Apple Vision Pro. Performing multiple tasks simultaneously naturally demands significant power while maintaining fast performance. To tackle this, Apple introduced an innovative solution by combining the M2 Silicon chip with a new R1 chip, creating a dual chipset configuration.

The M2 chipset drives computational tasks and manages heat in the Apple Vision Pro, while the R1 chip focuses on reducing visual latency. This innovative combination results in an incredibly low latency of just 12 milliseconds, claimed to be 8 times faster than human perception by Apple.

7. Spatial Audio Integration

Apple Vision Pro offers immersive sound with dual-driver audio pods, enhancing realism and integration with reality. While it lacks surround sound, the pods deliver audio as if it’s coming from you or another object in the environment.

With spatial audio integration, sound becomes an integral part of the immersive experience, dynamically positioned in 3D space for natural sound effects like rustling leaves or distant roars. This feature adds a new level of realism to AR/VR gaming, movie watching, and everyday interface interactions.

8. Spatial Photos

If spatial sound is familiar, spatial photos will pique curiosity. Apple Vision Pro captures images perfectly, enhancing depth and realism. The headset “scans” surfaces, promising lifelike images of people and scenery. Users can fully immerse in photos, preserving valuable memories just as they were experienced in real life.

9. Digital Avatar

One of Apple Vision Pro’s most remarkable features is the rendered 3D Face. Front sensors on the headset enable AI to capture your facial features and create a virtual avatar that mimics your expressions. This digital version can be used in Facetime for communication, whether you’re wearing the headset or not.

10. Iris Scanner

Apple Vision Pro introduces advanced security with a retinal scan login feature called OpticID, alongside existing TouchID and FaceID. Optic ID analyzes iris patterns using LED light and compares them to stored data in the device’s Secure Enclave. Notably, it can distinguish between iris patterns, even in identical twins, as highlighted by Mike Rockwell, Apple’s VP of technology development, during the WWDC keynote.
