Starting from the first three political parties formed, the National Council of Nigeria and Cameroons (NCNC) was one of the political parties in Nigeria and it was led by Nnamdi Azikwe.
These parties were formed before Nigerian got independence, 1959 to be precise.
Truth be told, in the history of Nigeria, there’s never been a time when we have more political parties like we have today.
The Northern People’s Congress (NPC), another of the pioneering Nigerian political parties, was led by Ahmadu Bello, while the Action Group (AG), the last of the first three political parties then, was led by Obafemi Awolowo.
Anyways, thanks to the Nigerian government structure and politics that made room for political groups to present themselves as vehicles for a better democracy.
In the past years, the top electoral seats have been a battle for few of the top political parties mentioned below;
- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is a major contemporary political party in Nigeria. Its policies generally lie towards the centre-right of the political spectrum. It won every Presidential election between 1999 and 2011, and was until the 2015 elections, the governing party in the Fourth Republic although in some cases, amid a few controversial electoral circumstances. Currently, PDP controls 14 states out of 36 states in Nigeria. Slogan is Power to the People while Uche secondus is the new party national chairman after the just concluded PDP convention.
- All Progressives Congress (APC)
This is one of the major opposition party of PDP with a slogan is change while Adams Oshiomole is its current national chairman.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is a political party in Nigeria, formed on 6 February 2013 in anticipation of the 2015 elections. APC candidate Muhammadu Buhari won the presidential election by almost 2.6 million votes in 2015, in 2019 he won with about 3 million votes. Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat on 31 March. This was the first time in Nigeria’s political history that an opposition political party unseated a governing party in a general election and one in which power transferred peacefully from one political party to another. In addition, the APC won the majority of seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives in the 2015 elections, though it fell shy of winning a super-majority to override the ability of the opposition People’s Democratic Party to block legislation.
- African Democratic Congress (ADC)
National chairman is Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a political party in Nigeria. The party was originally named “Alliance for Democratic Change” when it was formed in 2005, but changed to the African Democratic Congress by the time the party was registered with the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The goal of this name change was for the party to be able “to effectively encompass and reflect the aspirations of our people.” The ADC headquarters is located in Abuja, Nigeria, but there are plans for the office to relocate in 2019. The party constitution states that the goal of the party is to create a grass root organization, of and for Nigerians. For the selection of their candidates for the 2019 Nigerian general election, the ADC used the method of party members directly electing candidates during the primaries. On 24 September 2018, the African Democratic Congress selected senator Abdulaziz Nyako as the candidate for the 2019 Nigerian general elections.
- Action Democratic Party (ADP)
Action Democratic Party (ADP) is a political party in Nigeria. It was founded in June 2017 by some politically concerned Nigerians who feel there should be a third force to counter the APC and PDP. The current National Chairman of the party is Eng. Yabagi Sani. The party got officially registered and announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a full fledged political party on June 2017
- Social Democratic Party (SDP)
The Social Democratic Party of Nigeria, popularly known as SDP, was established as a political party to encompass the ideals of a center left political organization.
