Immigration is simply the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs 2019 report Trends in International Migrant Stock: The 2019 Revision the United states has the highest number of immigrants with over 50 million foreign born persons living in the country. Germany comes in at number while Russia drops to number 4. See the full list below

1.United States – 50.7 million

The United States is the country with the most immigration in the world, and is one of the world’s most multicultural societies. virtually all countries around the world represented in the United States but the majority of immigrants in the United States come from countries like Mexico, India, China, and the Philippines. 

2. Germany – 13.1 million

Germany has the second largest number of immigrants, attracting many high-skilled immigrants from around the world. The majority come from Turkey, Poland, Syria and Italy.

3. Saudi Arabia – 13.1 million

Saudi Arabia possesses around 18 per cent of the world’s proven petroleum reserves and ranks as the largest exporter of petroleum, this unsurprisingly attracts lots of immigrants. These immigrants majorly come from India, Syria, Pakistan, and the Philippines. 

4. Russian Federation – 11.6 miliion

Despite its low birth rate, Russia ranks as the 9th most populous country in the world. This population could be attributed to the 11.6 million immigrants living in the former soviet state. he majority of immigrants to Russia come from surrounding nations and former USSR members like Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, and Moldova. 

5. United Kingdom – 9.6 million

The United Kingdom attract immigrants from all over the world, he largest groups come from India, Poland, and Pakistan. In 2018, people born outside the UK made up an estimated 14% of the UK’s population and an estimated 39% of migrants came from EU countries.

6. United Arab emirates – 8.6 million

The UAE is one of the most welcoming places in the world for migrants. Migrants, particularly migrant workers, make up a majority (approximately 80%) of the resident population of the UAE, and account for 90% of its workforce.

7. France – 8.3 million

The area with the largest proportion of immigrants is the Parisian urban area (Greater Paris), where almost 40% of immigrants lived in 2012. Other regions with important immigrant populations are Lyon and Marseille.

8. Canada – 8 million

For the past two decades, Canada has been the go-to destination for immigrants, with a total of 313,580 immigrating in 2019 and 8 million total living in the country. Ontario was the province with the most immigrants in 2019, with 139,071 immigrants while Quebec and British Columbia are second and third respectively.

9. Australia – 7.5 million

Since 1945, more than 7 million people have settled in Australia. The majority of these settlers and immigrants originate from United Kingdom, New Zealand, China, Italy, and Vietnam.

10. Italy – 6.3 million

Italy has had problems with illegal immigration for a number of years, however, there are around 6,300,000 people residing legally in Italy who have an immigration background, making up for around 10% of the total Italian population. These migrants come from across Europe, Asia and Africa, especially countries like Romania, Albania, Morocco, China and Ukraine.
