HERE IS THE FULL LIST OF WINNERS AT CULTURES BIGGEST NIGHT.
Afrobeats continue to soar higher worldwide, and this dominance has seen some of the genre’s most talented acts getting recognition on the global stage. Afrobeats’ biggest ambassadors and two of the most gifted musical acts to come out of Africa, Wizkid and Tems, won big at the 2022 BET Awards.
Wizkid, Tems, and Justin Bieber won the best collaboration category for Essence. At the same time, Tems picked up the Best International Act category, making her the first female act from Nigeria to win two BET awards.
The 2022 edition of the BET Award ceremony was themed #CultureBiggestNight and held on Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The BET Awards celebrate black excellence in music, culture, entertainment, and sports.
For the first time, an Afrobeat act is performed on the main stage. Here are five (5) moments from the BET Awards that will interest you:
- Wizkid And Tems Win Big On Cultures Biggest Night: The duo with the greatest song out of Africa landed another award at this year’s BET Awards. Essence remix featuring Justin Bieber was awarded the best collaboration.
This is Big Wiz’s fourth BET Awards, having won the best international act twice in 2012 and 2017 and the HER Award for Brown Skin Girl in 2020. This is Tems’ first BET Awards but not the last for the night and certainly not for the nearest future.
- Tems Win Best International Act – raving about Temilade’s vocal prowess at this point seems like a waste of time. It is no news that the new face of Afrobeat is taking Nigeria/Africa music to new heights, and the BET Awards couldn’t have disagreed.
On her debut BET appearance, TEMS walked home with two BET Awards, becoming the second Nigerian to win in the main category after global smash hit Essence was announced as the winner of the Best Collaboration category.
- Fireboy Light Up The Crowd – As the first Nigerian act to perform on the BET main stage, Fireboy DML gave an outstanding performance that kept the audience dancing on their feet. On a night celebrating black culture, the Peru crooner delivered a mesmerizing performance that kept many wanting more. The world can’t get enough of Afrobeats, and the genre’s biggest ambassadors are ready to introduce African music and culture to the world.
- Pheelz Finessed The Crowd At The Pre-Live Show – Award-winning producer, singer, and songwriter Pheelz dazzled the BET crowd at the pre-live show with his global hit “Finesse.” The YBNL/Empire act is of two Afrobeat artists that performed at the BET Awards. Afrobeats and Nigerian music can’t stop winning at this point.
- Diddy Lifetime Achievement Award – Sean Diddy Combs was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contribution to black music and culture. A surprise appearance by Kanye West, who presented him the award alongside BabyFace, was followed by a breathtaking performance with guest performers.
These are artists he discovered or collaborated with over the years, including former Bad Bad Records artists like rapper turned Belizean politician Shyne, The Lox, Lil Kim, and Busta Rhymes, who joined him for a medley of hits such as “Victory,” “Bad Boyz,” “I Need a Girl,” and “Pass The Courvoisier Pt. II” respectively.
