The Bible does not give exact accounts of how the apostles died. However church historians and secular historians have over time, based on research given us reliable details on the nature of the disciples’ death. See them below.


Apostle Peter

Peter the Apostle, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, and the first leader of the early Church. Peter was sentenced him to death by crucifixion by Roman authorities. He was eventually crucified upside down as he felt unworthy to die In the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

Apostle Andrew

Andrew was an appostle of Christ and brother of Peter. Like his brother, Andrew was also crucified, tied upside down in an x-shaped cross from where he preached for two days before he finally died.

Bartholomew the Apostle

Bartholomew the Apostle, also known as Nathanael was one of the twelve apostles of Christ. While little is known about his death, the consensus is that Bartholomew was flayed to death by whip, where he was literally torn to shreds.

Matthew the Apostle

Matthew, like most of the apostles late in their lives, became a missionary and was arrested in Ethiopia. It was there that he was staked to the earth by spears and then beheaded.

Apostle Thomas

Thomas was stabbed to death while carrying out missionary work in India. He eventually died from the stab wounds.

James the Great

James the Great also known as James, son of Zebedee and Saint James the Greater, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. James is described as one of the first disciples to join Jesus. James was beheaded by King Herod.

Saint Matthias

Matthias was, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas’ betrayal of Jesus and his subsequent death. Matthias was was subsequently stoned and then beheaded late in the 1st century.

Apostle John

John was listed as the youngest apostle. He is reported to have also gone to Rome where he was thrown in boiling oil but survived, to live to a ripe old age, the only one reported to have a non-violent death.

Apostle Jude

Apostle Jude was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is generally identified with Thaddeus. Jude was crucified during his missionary work in Persia by the Magi.

Apostle Philip

Apostle Philip is known in Christian traditions as the apostle who preached in Greece, Syria, and Phrygia. According to most historians, Philip’s death was exceedingly cruel.[ He was impaled by iron hooks in his ankles and hung upside down to die.

James the Less

James, leader of the church in Jerusalem , was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat him to death with a fuller’s club.

Apostle Simon

The apostle Simon is not Simon Peter (Andrew’s brother) but Simon the Zealot. Very little is known about him inside or outside of the Bible. All that is known about his death is that he was also was crucified.

Apostle Mark died in Alexandria, Egypt , after being dragged by Horses through the streets until he was dead.

Saint Luke

Saint Luke hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous Preaching to the lost.

Apostle Paul

Apostle Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. He later tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67.
