Around 5:22pm on Wednesday 10th January 2024, Afrobeats Queen, Tiwa Savage took to her social media to announce that her very much anticipated first feature film “Water and Garri”will be released later this year on streaming platform Prime Video and will also be showing in over 240 countries and territories worldwide!
In her words, “This has been over two years in the making and I must say this is probably one of the most adventurous, fulfilling things I’ve done.”
“I honestly can’t wait to take you guys along with me on this next phase of my life and art…. I’m just getting started,” she wrote.
From what we know, here are 5 things to expect when it drops.
Tiwa Savage As Executive Producer & Lead Actor
It is not the first time we have seen Tiwa on our TV Screen for something entirely different from what we already know of her, which is singing.
You can recall with us that Tiwa Savage was a key cast member of the award-winning TV drama “MTV Shuga Naija” over a decade ago when it first launched.
This time, the sensational singer is not only a cast but also an Executive Producer in conjunction with her company Everything Savage, an entertainment outfit based in Nigeria. From her announcement yesterday, she wrote: “I feel blessed and honoured not only be making my debut as a lead actor, but to have also executively produced this film.”
Tiwa Savage is doing this in collaboration with Unbound Studios and its subsidiary, JM Films.
Talent manager, Vanessa Amadi-Ogbonna, Jimi Adesanya of Unbound Studios and Meji Alabi are also executive producers.
Tiwa Savage Plays The Role Of A Fashion Designer
She plays the role of Aisha, a fashion designer who returns to her hometown following a family member’s demise, after ten years in the United States. Aisha finds that things have changed at home while she was away. She must now navigate family, friendships and past wounds.
Mike Afolarin, Jemima Osunde Feature As Cast Members, Meiji Alabi as Director
Mike Afolarin who played Ishaya in Netflix’s “Far From Home,” actress cum influencer, Jemima Osunde & Andrew Bunting are a part of cast members.
British-Nigerian filmmaker Meji Alabi of JM Films is the director.
Meji is known for his works with some of the biggest names in the music space, including Beyonce, for her 2020 Black Is King project.
Expect Soundtrack by the Queen herself, Tiwa Savage
In 2021, Tiwa Savage dropped an EP named “Water and Garri,” she also made the soundtrack for the movie.
We’ll be keeping an eye out to see if songs off the EP will also be featured in the film when it drops.
Coming To Amazon Prime Naija
Streaming giant Amazon Prime with commercially successful originals like “Brotherhood”, “Gangs of Lagos”, “King of Thieves” and many more will look to add this to their growing catalogue of Nollywood titles.
