Lagos is known for its fast growth, but once the rainy season begins, another side of the city appears. In many neighborhoods, a few hours of rainfall is enough to flood roads, trap vehicles, damage homes, and completely disrupt movement.
While flooding has become a yearly problem across different parts of the state, some areas experience it more severely than others because of poor drainage systems, low elevation, overcrowding, and rapid urban development. For residents, commuters, and people planning to rent or buy property, knowing these flood-prone locations can save time, money, and stress.
Below are some of the areas in Lagos that regularly experience serious flooding during heavy rainfall:
- Ikate Elegushi, Lekki
Chisco bus stop axis and the inner streets flood badly. Reclaimed land with nowhere for water to drain.
- Agungi, Lekki
No proper drainage channels exist in Agungi. The central road and several inner streets are known for consistent flooding.
- Isheri North / Mile 12 axis, Kosofe
Riverine flooding zone. When the Oyan Dam releases water, the Ogun River overflows directly into residential streets here.
- Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere
Same drainage failure, Adeniran Ogunsanya is one of the most reliably flooded commercial streets on the mainland.
- Owode Onirin
Known for severe road flooding during peak rainy periods, especially around the market and expressway axis.
- Apple Junction, Ago Palace Way
Vehicles and motorcycles consistently struggle to pass through waterlogged roads here after heavy downpours.
- Ago Bridge, Amuwo-Odofin
Same stretch as Apple Junction. Floods fast and drains slowly due to poor road gradient and blocked channels.
- Ilaje-Bariga, Bariga
One of the most flood-prone communities on the mainland. It sits right on the lagoon shoreline, so when it rains heavily, water comes from both above and below. Streets and homes regularly go underwater, and the flooding lingers long after the rain stops.
- Addo Road, Ajah
The drainage here is a major struggle. Water has been known to enter living rooms on inner streets during peak rainy season.
- Mile 2, Ajeromi
Regularly flooded after heavy rain, with social media consistently capturing submerged roads and stranded commuters here
- Mushin/Itire Junction
Dense population, waste-blocked drains, and low elevation make this area flood every single rainy season.
- Owode-Elede, Agege
Canoe territory. Photos of residents paddling through this neighbourhood surface every rainy season without fail.
- Oworonshoki waterfront axis, Kosofe
Sits right on the Lagos lagoon, so flooding here is almost guaranteed once rain is heavy enough. The waterfront communities bear the worst of it, with water pushing in from the lagoon while rainwater simultaneously builds up from blocked drains inland.
- Jakande Estate, Lekki
Whenever it rains, it is horrific. Residents have resorted to using waste to fill up potholes created by floodwater just to move around.
- Idi-Araba, Mushin
Despite being home to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), the surrounding residential streets flood badly every rainy season. Blocked drains and a dense, overcrowded layout mean water has nowhere to go but into homes and roads.
- Adeniji Adele area, Lagos Island
Key streets including sections near Adeniji Market have been repeatedly submerged by gutter overflow.
- Itafaji, Lagos Island
Streets here regularly become impassable with stagnant, foul-smelling water. The flooding persists even days after rainfall stops.
- Ajao Estate, Isolo
Sits on low-lying land close to drainage channels that overflow during heavy rain. The estate floods regularly and the water tends to creep into ground-floor apartments when the rain is sustained.
- Chevron Drive inner streets, Lekki
The expressway-facing parts look fine, but the inner streets off Chevron Drive are a different story. Poor drainage and rapid development without proper water management means water accumulates quickly and takes hours to recede.
- Osapa London, Lekki
The drainage channels and canals in the area are consistently overwhelmed. The Osapa axis has always been known for flooding.
- Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island
The backstreets here often suffer from tidal surges where the Atlantic Ocean rises and pushes water back into the streets.
- Ilasan, Lekki
Low-lying area off the Lekki expressway that sits between bigger estates with no adequate drainage to handle overflow.
These are some of the places in Lagos that get really flooded during the rainy season. Did we miss out on anyone? Add more in the comment section. We’d like to hear from you.
