10 moments that defined the 2017 Oscars, as Moonlight, Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali shine

8. The Red carpet Trump protests

A number of Oscar-nominees threw their support behind the American Civil Liberties Union – ACLU, the organization that first challenged President Trump’s travel ban by wearing blue ribbons to the ceremony.

Irish-Ethiopian star Ruth Negga, who was nominated for best actress, was first on the red carpet sporting the political accessory on her dress.

Barry Jenkins, Director of Moonlight, Hamilton creator – Lin-Manuel Miranda and his mother were also spotted with the blue bow pinned to their outfits.

7. Mahershala Ali becoming first Muslim actor to win an Oscar

Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of a drug dealer in Moonlight won him his first Academy Award for best supporting actor. By virtue of this, he is the first Muslim to be awarded an Oscar for acting, and the amazing thing is he is a first time nominee. This is definitely the year of Ali who starred in the Netflix series Luke Cage and also had a role in Hidden Figures, another Oscar-nominated film.
