BREAKING: Former President Muhammadu Buhari Passes Away in London Clinic At 82

In a solemn announcement today, the family of former President Muhammadu Buhari confirmed that he died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, while receiving medical treatment in a London clinic. His spokesperson, Garba Shehu, made the disclosure in a post on X, offering a prayer:

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.

May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

A Storied Career, Two Eras of Leadership

  • Military ruler (1983 – 1985): Buhari first rose to power via a coup and led Nigeria with a strict discipline campaign that included frog-jumps for late government workers and jail terms for cheating students. His rule was cut short after 20 months.
  • Democratically elected president (2015 – 2023): He made history in 2015 by defeating a sitting president, becoming the first opposition nominee to do so. His administration emphasized anti-corruption efforts, economic reforms, and counterinsurgency campaigns.

Achievements, Challenges & Legacy

  • Anti-corruption crusade: Buhari championed a broom-carrying campaign to “sweep corruption” from Nigeria. While this earned him praise, critics accused him of targeting political adversaries selectively.
  • Security & economy: His tenure included a prolonged war with Boko Haram and widespread insecurity. Nigeria faced its worst recession, record inflation, and soaring unemployment. Unemployment hovered above 20%, and half the population lived on less than $1.90 a day.
  • #EndSARS unrest: In 2020, protests erupted nationwide after widespread reports of police brutality by SARS. The government’s crackdown and delayed response drew international condemnation.

Final Days in London

Buhari had been battling an unspecified illness and spent recent weeks in intensive care in London. Family sources confirmed he was under close medical observation until his condition worsened.

A few days earlier, Vice President Kashim Shettima was dispatched by President Tinubu to check on his former boss’s health and ensure adequate support was in place.

What Happens Next

Funeral arrangements are expected to follow Islamic rites, with national flags to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect. Details to follow in the coming hours.
