RCCG’s Credibility Problem: Why Nigerians Are Asking Questions

Nigerians are calling out the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) General Overseer, Pastor Adeboye, for refusing to come out to protest against the senseless killings, banditry and terrorism under Tinubu’s administration like he did in 2020, during Buhari regime… which wasn’t even as worse as it is presently.

The latest criticism actually stems from a memo circulating on social media, where RCCG debunked the news of Pastor Adeboye staging a protest many years back…and explaining what really happened.

Nigerians accuse RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, of refusing to publicly challenge the current administration despite the severe economic hardship many citizens are experiencing.

The criticism is simple.

Many Nigerians remember seeing Pastor Adeboye amongst many other church leaders and celebrities even…speaking openly about national issues. They remember those voices appearing willing to challenge those in power.

Today, however, many of those same voices appear significantly more restrained.

The frustration many Nigerians are expressing online is not necessarily because Pastor Adeboye has endorsed any government. Rather, it is because they believe he is applying different standards to different administrations.

Fair or unfair, that is the accusation.

The Elephant In the Room

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, is an ordained pastor in RCCG. Adeboye himself confirmed this at the May 2026 Holy Ghost Service, stating that she completed the full spiritual formation process and was ordained as an assistant pastor over a decade ago, long before her husband showed any interest in the presidency.

That fact alone, innocent as it may be on paper, makes it almost impossible for Nigerians to see RCCG as politically neutral. When the wife of the sitting president is a pastor in your church, neutrality starts to look like a very comfortable position to occupy.

But here is the thing. When asked about the earlier protest photo, Pastor Adeboye explained that his past participation in public walks was in obedience to a directive from the CAN chairman. He said, “If he talks tomorrow and asks me to march, I will.”

The Real Charge

Nobody is really arguing that an 84-year-old man needs to be in the streets physically marching. What people are insinuating is that: every pastor (or even celebrity) who is not speaking up right now over the rate of insecurity is part of the system.

The accusation Nigerians are making is not that Adeboye is evil or that RCCG is a criminal enterprise. The accusation is selective silence.

That the same energy used to protest against insecurities back then in Jonathan’s and Buhari’s administration, is not being applied to Tinubu, and that the proximity of the First Lady to the church makes that silence very convenient.
