If you’ve ever entered a danfo in Lagos, you already know you’re not just paying for transport; you’re also paying for unsolicited advice and premium drama.
We asked people about their wildest danfo experiences, and trust us when we say that these yellow buses have seen it all.
1. “My stolen phone and pushed out of bus“– Bola*, 21
So I boarded a danfo with my two months old iPhone 11 in my hand. If you know Lagos, you know that’s the safest place for your phone to be. The driver nudged me and said to use my seatbelt and keep my phone in my bag that a fight had broken out metres ahead. i did just that. All of a sudden this driver became aggressive and said to come down. Very confused, I alighted and he zoomed off. To my greatest surprise my phone had been achieved in that bus.
2. “Dropped past my destination” – Seyi*, 25
I was chilling in the danfo on my way to Egbeda when my girlfriend that time sent a random breakup text. I couldnt even believe my eyes. I just sat there staring into nothingness and thinking of where “we” went wrong. It was when the driver shouted “Iyanapaja ni last busstop, mi o de kantagua” that i was jolted back to reality. “Iyanapaja ke??!! I got down from the bus in slowmo and went to withdraw my last 1k that took me back to Egbeda. I know it was not the driver’s fault but I still blame him and that short Yoruba girl.
3. “I sat beside someone who could not just mind her business” – Tola*, 25
I sat beside this random girl and when the bus started to move, I brought out my phone to reply texts on whatsapp. I noticed the girl’s body was angled towards mine, meaning she was looking into my phone with me. I reduced the brightness of my phone so she wouldn’t see my texts but me too, i couldnt see. lol. I moved to tiktok and she still kept her eyes glued to my screen. Even had the nerve to burst out laughing after a funny skit. I just hissed and locked my phone, let’s both be enjoying the breeze and lagos scenery till we get to our destinations. It was not even as if she had a nice laugh. Sounded like a castrated goat.
5. “Witnessed someone’s “life” reduced to nothing within seconds” – Ahmed*, 32
So this girl was sitting beside me in the danfo and just by the half-closed door. She couldn’t fight the sweet danfo breeze blowing against her face and started dozing off. Her phone slipped out of her hand and fell out of the bus hitting the tarred road. Before she could even blink, a car ran it over and crushed it flat, her ‘life,’ as she called it, reduced to pieces on the road.
