Burna Boy Kicked A FanOut for ‘Sleeping’: Does an Artist have the right to do that?

If there’s one thing Nigerians love, it’s a good concert gist and Burna Boy just gave the internet another one. At his recent Denver show, a clip popped up showing him pausing his performance to call out a couple sitting right in front. According to Burna, the lady was sleeping and from the look on his face, that did not sit well with him. He asked them to leave before continuing the show and as expected, the clip went viral almost immediately.

Not long after, the lady at the center of the drama ,Chaltu Jateny spoke up. And boy, did she change the narrative. She shared that she had just lost her daughter’s father and was emotionally, physically and mentally drained. She said she attended the concert to grab one small moment of joy, a little escape from the pain. On top of that, Burna Boy was running late, so by the time he finally took the stage, exhaustion had already won the battle.

Now, whether she was the only one dozing or both she and her boyfriend nodded off is still unclear. But one thing is certain: she became the face of the drama and she felt every bit of the embarrassment.

Anyone who follows Burna knows he doesn’t joke with stage energy, especially in the front row. He thrives on reaction, hype and presence. So seeing someone asleep while he’s giving his all? In his mind, that’s a no-go.

But let’s pause for a moment. Is it really fair to kick someone out just because they aren’t “vibing” even if they’ve paid for the concert? Often, what we see on the surface doesn’t tell the full story. In this case, that “closed eye” moment was loaded with grief, pain and exhaustion not disrespect.

This viral moment got people questioning his act and his right to kick out a fan especially when they paid to be there.

So here’s the real question: should a performer have the power to remove someone just because they aren’t “into it,” even if they’ve paid?
